CHAPTER 17

Cassie read the words on the screen a dozen times, trying to make sense of them. How could the van belong to the Federal Bureau of Investigation?

Would the law enforcement agency really kidnap someone from a local police station, then hide it?

“Okay, this can’t be happening,” Cassie said with a shake of her head. “How is this right? Could this be a mistake?”

“That’s a pretty weird mistake,” Wyatt said as he snatched the receiver to his phone and spun his Rolodex back to his FBI contact.

He jabbed in the number again and waited as the phone rang.

Cassie slid her hand over to press the speakerphone button.

The line trilled a few times before someone answered. “Malik, FBI. With whom am I speaking?”

“Sheriff Wyatt Cooper from Hideaway Bay again.”

“Sheriff Cooper, what can I do for you this time? Do you have a revised set of names you’d like to check?”

“No, but I do have some other information, and I’d like some answers. Now, I have two people sitting in my jail downstairs who claim to be FBI agents. Yet, they aren’t even on your list of agents who work for the Bureau, but here’s the curious part. I have a white van pulling up to my station, and a video of two people wrangling one of my prisoners into it. That van is registered to the FBI. Now, I’d like some answers here, pal.”

“What?” the man asked after a brief pause.

“Agent Malik, this is Cassie McGuire. I’m a special consultant with the Hideaway Bay police department. Can I get your email address?”

“Sure,” the man said, passing it along to her.

She bobbed her head as she exported the video clip of Nate being loaded into the back of a white van, attached it to an email and typed his address into the top. “I’ve just sent you an email from Sheriff Cooper’s account. Can you watch that video for me?”

An office chair creaked on the other end of the line before a few clicks of a mouse came out of the speaker. After a brief period of silence, the man said, “And you’re saying this van is registered to the FBI?”

“Yes. We zoomed in on the plate and came up with the first letter and the four digits. When we searched the department of motor vehicles, filtering by vehicle type, color, et cetera, we came up with a van registered to the FBI.”

“Well, that’s your problem,” Agent Malik answered, “you don’t have the entire plate. You probably got one of the letters or numbers wrong.”

“Oh, and it so happened to come up with the FBI as the owner. What are the chances that happens?” Cassie shot back.

Wyatt leaned closer to the phone, grabbing the desk. “Listen, I really need to know if the two people I have downstairs are yours or not. Do you have any undercover agents here?”

“Uh, I mean…I thought you said these were badge carrying FBI agents.”

“They say they are, but you don’t have any record of them whatsoever.
